The Australian Defence Forces and the Australia Spain Business Association jointly sponsored an exclusive presentation to the Spanish Defence Industry suppliers on the Australian 2009 Defence White Paper and Defence Capability Plan 2009. This event, by inivitation only, took place at the Australian Embassy in Madrid, on the afternoon of November 5, 2009 and was attended by more than 20 interested parties. The Australian 2009 Defence White Paper looks at the forward planning of Australia's Defence Strategy and requirements from 2010 through 2030 and includes many opportunities for Spanish companies to become defence material suppliers. There is a unique opportunity for Spanish companies to participate as suppliers to Australia's Defence material requirements which will involve renewal of 80% of defence hardware and expenditures of approximately $A 120 billion ( € 72 billion) over the coming 20 years of which 40% will be open to foreign suppliers. The presentation also gave attendees the opportunity to learn specific details about Australia's Defence plans and acted as a contact point to establish relations with DMO ( Australia's Defence Materiel Organisation) through which all defence supply contracts are negotiated. Spanish companies are currently major contractors to both the Australian Air Force and the Australian Navy with multi billion dollar contracts in force and Spain's reputation as a reliable external contractor source is highly considered by Australian defence authorities.
