Spanish multinational Abengoa selects Brisbane to establish first Australian office.

Abengoa Solar, a pioneer in the use of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP), has expanded its presence in the Asia Pacific region by choosing to establish its first Australian office in Brisbane.

A subsidiary of the Abengoa S.A Group, Abengoa Solar is a global leader in the development and construction of large scale grid connected solar power plants. Currently constructing the world’s largest CSP plant in Arizona USA, Abengoa Solar continues to develop a number of solar energy plants throughout the world.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman welcomed the strategic decision by Abengoa Solar to establish its first Australian office in Brisbane.

“Strategic investments such as Abengoa Solar continue to reinforce Brisbane’s growing reputation as a leading location within the Asia Pacific region for clean technology companies.

“As Australia’s energy mix moves towards cleaner technologies, it will be essential for Brisbane to continue to attract and build its capabilities within these emerging industries,” Cr Newman said.

“These important investments will allow Brisbane to access unique technologies and global expertise that can bring solar energy to a larger population base.”

Brisbane Marketing’s Investment Attraction division played a significant role in attracting this investment to Brisbane, through strategic working relationships with Abengoa Solar, the Spanish Trade Commission in both Sydney and Madrid, and Austrade Madrid.

"Brisbane Marketing has made a strong commitment to fostering closer relations between Spain and Brisbane, and this exciting new office for Abengoa Solar is a direct outcome of our ongoing work with Spanish companies,” said Daniel Havas, Brisbane Marketing’s Director of Investment Attraction.

“Brisbane Marketing has worked extensively with Abengoa Solar and its parent group Abengoa S.A for over a year, building a comprehensive business case that demonstrated the benefits of Brisbane for their business.

“After leading two business missions to Spain with the Spanish Trade Commission, we welcome this investment decision as recognition of the advantages Brisbane can offer to Spanish firms.

“We will continue working with Abengoa Solar to ensure the company capitalises on Brisbane’s long-term opportunities in the clean energy sector."

The new Brisbane office is the first stage of Abengoa Solar’s business expansion plans in Australia.

“Abengoa Solar made the decision to expand its Asia Pacific presence in Brisbane, because of the opportunities that exist in Queensland for companies within the clean energy industry,” said Alfonso Vega, Business Development Manager Australia for Abengoa Solar.

“Queensland also has an abundance of sunshine which is a key natural resource that we need for our solar energy projects.

“On a local level, Brisbane’s reputation in this sector is growing, with excellent intellectual capabilities within local companies and universities, which will drive the development of new solar technologies and applications.”

“Australia and Queensland have supportive policies and programs that can develop a robust solar industry and with well-considered plans to attract and facilitate investment in clean energy technologies, the future looks bright.

“This unique combination of natural assets, supportive government policies and global expertise makes Brisbane the perfect place to develop our first office in Australia.”
